‘Piskies’ is an abstract aerial photograph of the Kapunda Mine Site in South Australia. Ranking fourth in total copper production among historic mines in South Australia, the Kapunda Mine had the richest ore grade averaging over 20%, with vivid green colours still visible in the rocks and water today.
Kapunda had both Irish and Cornish people immigrate to help mine the Copper found in Kapunda back in 1842. When they moved to Kapunda, they brought their folklore stories of Piskies, Tommyknockers and Leprechauns. Piskies are seen as cheerful creatures with a prankish nature. They are said to be helpful but also mischievous, helping the elderly and sick whilst sometimes pulling pranks like leading the more able-bodied traveller astray in scrublands to get lost.
The photograph captures the abstract nature of the landscape, with a rainbow of natural colours visible across the surface of the site. It reminds me of a mythical land, a place that might just be the home of a few Piskies!
The photograph is printed on 310gsm 100% cotton rag archival paper. Other printing options are available, including size, matts, frames, and canvas. Please message me for customised options and costings.
