‘Antecedent’ is an aerial photo of the Obelisk, located in Robe, South Australia. I particularly like the angle of this photograph, highlighting the precarious position the Obelisk is in. I just love the variations of greens and blues in the water.
As many of you know, Robe holds a special part in my life and always will, and as it also does for many friends and people I talk to about Robe and my photographs.
The Southern Ocean is unforgiving and relentless, but the Robe Obelisk stands proudly on the point of Cape Dombey and still provides a landmark to navigate the entrance into Guichen Bay. Robe is a town and fishing port located on the Limestone Coast of South Australia. The obelisk was built on Cape Dombey in 1852 to help ships navigate safely into the bay. Even so, there have been a number of shipwrecks along the coast in the area. An automatic lighthouse was built on higher ground in 1973. The town’s distinctive combination of historical buildings, ocean, fishing fleets, lakes and dense bush is widely appreciated by locals and visitors.
And in case you’re wondering about the name… Antonyms for antecedent… include current, future, present, subsequent, after, and following… which I feel connects with the image. The current and present condition of the landscape in which the Obelisk sits and its uncertain future.
The photograph is printed on 260gsm premium white satin lustre paper in conjunction with Epson Ultrachrome archival inks to produce beautifully rich, vibrant colours and deep blacks.
